Agricultural water management, what is it?

Many of us may not know what agricultural water management is. The term may be new to us. In simple words, the field of agricultural water management mainly refers to irrigation and drainage and along with that proper water management in the area of rain fed agriculture. According to the statistics that are available total irrigated agriculture in the world covers almost 18 percent of the entire cropland. That amounts to approximately 277 million hectare. This land produces nearly 40 percent of all the different crops that are available. On the other hand, rain fed agriculture has 82 percent cropland and that is able to produce almost 60 percent of crops worldwide.

A lot of work is done constantly by experts in the field of agricultural water management. The World Bank supports countries in the world by granting loans. The highest loan figure was $1.1 billion in the financial year 2010. The loan was given mainly to the water sector, agriculture, rural development, forestry and also the fishing sector. There are serious concerns about rising food prices in the world and food security. There are issues regarding increasing water scarcity and gradual climate change. There is an immediate need to improve water management in areas such as agriculture and also rain fed agriculture because agriculture according to various estimates is consuming a high proportion of the total water resources.

Countries of the world have to come together and find out ways how things can be improved in agricultural water management. There are ways in which water can be utilized better in agriculture thereby reducing water wastage to a large extent. Water is becoming a precious resource and we need to use it carefully.

Water and waste water systems, know more about it

Not many of us know about waste water treatment and so I decided to read about it on the Internet. I came across quite a few facts and would like to share them with my readers. This is a subject that most of us do not think seriously about. Do you know what waste water is? How it can be treated? All of us use showers, sinks and also toilets every day. This creates the waste water. Can we do anything with this waste water? There are wastewater treatment plants. They treat the waste water and help to keep our planet healthy. Let us know more about water and waste water systems.

This is how the waste water is treated. The water that is used in our homes is drained down the pipes and drains almost every day. This waste water then goes to the local sewers. From the sewer systems the wastewater is carried from our houses to the different wastewater treatment plants. This is interesting, isn’t it? In the waste water treatment plants the water is separated into black water and grey water. The black water consists of mainly fecal matter and urine. This matter is decomposed. The grey water comes from different washing processes in our homes. This water is reusable. We can use it in our toilets and in our gardens.

There is a lot to know about water and waste water systems. The waste water goes through three different processes in waste water treatment plant. The first step is the primary treatment, the second step is called the secondary treatment and the last or the final step is known as the tertiary treatment.

What are the different solutions to water scarcity?

What are the different solutions to water scarcity?

Water scarcity is indeed a serious problem today. If you read the newspapers you will find that millions of dollars are just wasted annually on different water projects that are either abandoned, break or become unsustainable. What are the solutions to water scarcity? Countries have to come together and find a common solution to this problem as it concerns everybody. It is unthinkable that in the developing countries women and children still have to walk miles to get drinking water. Surely things can be done collectively to improve this situation. Many efforts are going on in water conservation so as to deal with the global water crisis but it is not enough. A lot of things need to be done further.

There is need for better water management for sure. If we do not waste water, then we can deal with the problem of water scarcity to quite some extent. Countries that have plenty of water resources tend to overlook the water shortage problem in the world as it is not affecting them right now. But if they are not careful they may soon join the list of countries that are facing acute water shortage. Water conservation is a good idea. People from all over the world realize the importance of water conservation and are taking steps to improve it. Some experts are working in the field of rainwater management so that farmers can use rainwater and irrigate their lands during the drought season. This is also a unique way to solve the water scarcity problem in the rural areas. Very little has been done but there is still hope. Each one of us will have to do our bit to find solutions to water scarcity problem.

Global water crisis may soon become a reality

Global water crisis may soon become a reality

Presently there is no water shortage in any of the continents as the amount of water available on earth is enough for the human as well as the animal population. It is also adequate to sustain the green environment around. But with the years, the numbers will keep growing and the need for potable water will also increase. Right now, as per the estimates almost one third of the entire world’s population does not have clean drinking water. And it is expected that the situation will be more serious by 2025 when almost two thirds of the total population will be hit by water scarcity. Isn’t that alarming?

There are developing countries that face water scarcity and over a billion people walk miles to get drinking water every day. Can you imagine access to clean water can be a back breaking job for these people? In some places, people have to buy water. Things could not get worse. Global water crisis can only be felt. It is indicated when there is inadequate access to clean drinking water. There is not enough water for sanitation and disposal of waste. Pollution of water resources is a big problem and you can witness regional conflicts too that arise due to water scarcity.

If something is not soon, this will become a serious problem in the years to come. One cannot ignore the issue as it has to with water, Human beings cannot do without water if they have to live. It has to be a joint effort by different countries to come together and think of a solution. Global water crisis can become a reality soon if proper steps are not taken.

Also with the low energy supply and increasing electricity prices use Solar Power to solve these issues.

Which are the best water filters?

If you have decided to buy and install water filters to improve the quality of the water, then a buying guide will certainly benefit you. It is essential to remove the common contaminants found in water to prevent illnesses but, at the same time, it is also very important to enjoy great tasting water. Water filters come in all shapes and sizes, from simple carafes to mounted systems. Besides, these filters are highly accurate and advanced and they even let you know when you need to replace them.

Amongst the most dangerous compounds for your health, there is arsenic, lead, chloroform or the well-known E.coli bacteria – all of them can be found in tap water. This is why many people choose bottled water over tap water – even so, advanced water filters can eliminate all the above-mentioned impurities and deliver fresh, clean, clear and great tasting tap water.

In USA, the Environmental Protection Agency, (EPA) is constantly developing consumer reports to determine the safety level of tap water. Testing the water is essential to prevent unpleasant situations, because knowing the contaminants present in the water is essential in order to determine the type of filter you need to install. Other factors that influence your decision include the amount of water you need on a daily basis.

Brief Guide on How to Pick the Most Suitable Water Filter for You

It is essential to find the filter that is the most suitable for you and your family. Permanent water filters are quite expensive but they are a long term investment. Besides, these filters are very easy to install – nonetheless, make sure to buy only water filters that are certified and previously tested and found very effective against water contaminants.
Another aspect that must be taken into account is the cost of the device – different devices come with different price tags, and those designed for high-capacity, long term use usually cost more. Also, don’t forget to pay attention to the yearly cost of the filter replacement, which can cost you up to $400 if you have a modern, top-notch water filter.

At the time being, there are hundreds of different water filters available on the market: some of them must be installed on the counter; other ones must be installed under the sink, other work as carafes while other filters work on the principle of reverse osmosis. One thing is for sure: all these filters aim to improve the quality of tap water and to reduce the risk of diseases and illnesses caused by bacteria. If your budget is quite reduced, a water filter jug can be the solution. You can find water filter jugs (with water filter cartridge) from $15.

All the filters are efficient to a certain extent, but it is believed that reverse osmosis water filters are the most efficient when it comes to reducing contaminants present in tap water (including arsenic). Despite the fact that these systems cost more, they are undoubtedly a very inspired investment in the long haul.

4 Basic Things to Keep in Mind for Passive Solar Home Designs

4 Basic Things to Keep in Mind for Passive Solar Home Designs

With the demand for energy efficiency on the rise, there is a growing interest in passive solar home designs. These designs create home solar power systems that try to cut down on heating and cooling with the help of materials, designs and planning and then add to this saved energy with the help of other solar power mechanisms. Here are four basic things to keep in mind when designing a passive solar home for you-

  1. Take Professional Help

Before you start incorporating solar home designs, you should always consult professionals. These professionals will help you decide on the best way to make your home energy efficient. They can help you choose the right design and material for your home and provide you with the correct design that will help suit your requirement best. If you are including passive solar home designs on existing homes, then take the home energy audit.

  1. Choose A Location For A New Home

If you are setting up a new home with solar home designs then the most important thing is the location. Try to find a spot for your new home that has the south side open; this will help you get the sun. There are some areas with local zoning regulations that guarantee your solar access. If you do not have these privileges then locate your home in the north end of an open space.

  1. Know How The System Works

When you are going to use solar home designs, you will have to be very clear about the mechanisms involved in it. This will help you find out ways to improve your home’s solar efficiency. The designs and materials you use, allow your home to collect heat during the day, store them in thermal mass. This system makes use of different elements-

a)      South-Facing Windows

During the cooling season, you should have windows on the south covered by awnings and shades to reduce overheating. During the heating season, make sure that they are not shaded to facilitate proper heating. Make sure that there are no tall buildings and trees obstructing the south-facing windows.

b)      Building Material

The thermal mass is the building material used for your home, the concrete or brick that you use. The nature of the material will determine how much a is absorbed by them in the heating and cooling season.

c)      Distribution Process

How the heat absorbed by your home is used depends on how it is distributed. You can use blowers and small fans to distribute the heat, or use dark window covers in the heating season and light covers in the cooling season since dark colours absorb heat better.

  1. Make Your Existing Home Solar Efficient

You can introduce certain solar home designs in your existing home, without building a new house. You can use the sunspace, or the trombe wall.

It is never too late to become energy efficient. Talk to an expert and try to incorporate these features.

Residential – Now You Can Install Solar Power Grid at Home

We are yet to make the best use of solar energy. Sunlight which is heavily wasted can be put to good use. Both commercial and residential sectors can stand to gain a lot of benefits from solar panel. Conventional energy is getting expensive day by day and it is high time for us to go with an alternative choice like solar power. Some corporate units are replacing diesel-generated energy with solar panel and residential sector should follow this footprint. Todae solar residential unit is all set to give you a hand in building the right infrastructure for solar panel system.

Solar power, once considered a quaint system of energy generation, has now become a more practical and affordable option as an alternative source of energy. It won’t be a tough job to install residential solar panel. Huge dependence on electrical energy has created a shortage in supply. Demand is getting to a new high while supply is not increasing proportionately. As long as you are getting enough of sunlight, you can produce good amount of energy. In warm geographical regions, you can have a plenty of sunlight most of the year and so can save a lot on your annual payment on power bill. Even in cold regions, it is possible to use residential solar panel whenever you are getting sunlight in abundance.

It does not require you to use much of sunlight to produce a huge amount of electricity. However, you may have to install photovoltaic panel to make an efficient use of solar power. Todae residential solar panel integrates high-end equipments to make a more efficient use of solar power and convert it into electricity. Initial investment for set-up may be a good sum but that compensates for what you can save on your monthly energy bill payment. Some ensure more efficient usage of energy by cutting down electricity consumption while slowly switching towards a solar-powered system.

Solar hot water panel is installed on the roof. If this is an impractical idea, the panels can be placed on a separate tower or pole in close proximity of the house. However, the length of wiring must be short to offset the problem of voltage drop. Solar power system has now become more efficient due to continuous research on it and implementation of state-of-the-art technology. Slimmer set-up is possible whereas in the old days, the panel needed to be broader and occupied more space. It means, even if your home lacks in right orientation, it still possible to install a solar power grid for power produce.

A Few Words On Radiant Heating

The process of radiant heating can be described simply by analyzing the fundamental ways how the Sun works to heat up the earth. Sun’s rays radiate through the space & atmosphere & strike on earth surface to heat it up. The warmed earth surface then heats up the entire surrounding & elevates air temperature. Much like the sun, radiant heater won’t heat up the air temperature first. Rather, it would start off by heating up the floor and the people as well as objects inside the room through infrared radiation.

Now, as the floor gets warm through radiant heating it would elevate up the surrounding air temperature, working as the secondary heaters. The good part of taking to radiant heaters is that here the heated ambience doesn’t get lost even when the door is opened suddenly pushing in volume of cold air inside. In case of blown air-heaters, a sudden opening of the door would make the heater rework to heat up the entered cold air again which would take up huge time to get back the previous warmer ambience inside the room. But when you are taking to radiant heating solutions, you are a sure winner even when the door has been widened all of a sudden. It’s because when you are opting for radiant heating, the floor and objects or people inside the room are heated up first and these tend to maintain the warmth all through and as soon as the door is forced after a sudden opening, the room gets back to its operating temperature quickly. Thus, radiant heating won’t compromise with the warmth factor even when the door is opened- the same reason why you can still feel the warmth of the sun on a winter morning.

It’s good to mention that radiant heating is energy saving- as radiant heating would spread gradually amidst the air, sans air movement, it does not take up much energy to heat up your room sufficiently.

How To Spring Clean Your House Using Environmentally-Friendly Products

Did you know that you can use items you have around the house to clean your home and prepare it for spring? You can now disinfect, dust and degrease your home with eco-friendly, natural and non-toxic products that are cost-effective and very efficient.

Clean Your Windows With Newspaper

Cleaning the windows can be a daunting task – however, they can be stainless and gorgeous if you clean them with newspaper, as most of them are printed using water-based inks (so you do not have to worry about smeared text anymore!). Say goodbye to lint forever! All you have to do is to mix water and white vinegar, spray the windows with this mixture then rub the glass using cloth. When the surface is dry, simply go over it with a piece of newspaper!

Turn Old Towels into Cleaning Rags

Do you have several old towels that you think about throwing away? If so, you should know that you can get free cleaning rags out of them – all you have to do is to cut them up. Use these cleaning rags instead of the disposable paper towels, as they are not only cheaper but more environmentally-friendly as well!

Get Rid of Unpleasant Odours With Fresh Lemons

Unpleasant odours can be easily eliminated with fresh lemons – you cannot get rid of the fish, garlic and other similar odours if you cut peel a lemon and then simmer the peels over the stovetop (and add water from time to time). Your home will smell like fresh lemons and you eliminate the odours quickly and without the hassles!

Salt as a Sponge Sanitizer

Sponges must be cleaned on a regular basis to remove the bacteria that accumulate in it over the weeks. Rinse the sponges, then soak them in cold water with extra salt for a couple of hours – this way, you will kill the bacteria and the sponges will be ready to use right away!

Clean Your Floors with a Vinegar Mixture

You can easily clean your floors using a mixture of water and white vinegar, regardless of the type of flooring: you can use it for tile, linoleum or unwaxed wood floors. All you have to do is to create a mixture of 1/3 water, 1/3 white vinegar and 1/3 rubbing alcohol, and then add three drops of liquid for dish washing.

Use Lemons and Baking Soda to De-Gunk Your Microwave!

Lemons and baking soda certainly come in handy to clean microwaves, as the citric acid found in lemon juice simply dissolves food residue and makes it easier to remove. Put lemon wedges in a bowl of water inside the microwave and turn it on for three minutes, then leave it like that for another 10 minutes. If you still don’t manage to remove every stain, mix some baking soda with water and you will scrub them immediately!

Tea Tree Oil Is Highly Efficient Against Germs

Tea tree oil is an excellent antiseptic cleaner for toilets, doorknobs and such, as it kills germs and mould instantly. Make a mixture of ½ teaspoon liquid soap for dish washing, ½ teaspoon tea tree oil, two cups of hot water and two tablespoons of 20 Mule Team Borax, then shake the mixture and spray it all over the surface you want to disinfect.

Baking Soda and Vinegar for Clogged Drains

Clogged drains can give your headaches – next time you deal with this issue, remember to pour baking soda (¾ cup) down the drain followed by half a cup of white vinegar. Leave it for about half an hour and afterwards add a kettle of boiling water. This mixture will unclog the drains right away, and prevent them from unclogging in the future, if you do it regularly.

Treat Yellowed Linens with Lemons or Salt

Sheets turn yellow as time passes – if you want to brighten them, you do not need bleach to do so! All you have to do is to add ¼ cup lemon juice in the washing machine when you clean them. On the other hand, you can boil the linens in a large pot, with several tablespoons of salt and soda.

Steam Cleaners

If you want to clean and sterilize your carpets, you can do so with steam cleaners as they use pressurized water vapour that penetrate deep into the carpet fibers. You can add water and vinegar (equal parts) in the steam cleaner’s reservoir instead of buying commercial steam-cleaning detergents. If the carpets are very greasy, then add more white vinegar – make sure to test the mixture on a small patch before using it on the entire surface, to prevent discoloration. Use the steam cleaner according to the instructions, and then make sure to keep the windows and doors open for proper ventilation that will prevent the growth of mould and mildew. The vinegar smell will go away as soon as the carpets dry.
